Benefits Experienced trades people deliver all trades and each trade is taught by a trade specific tutor. Plenty of materials available during all courses. Good training bays and course content. Course Outline - Level 3 Certificate in Building, Installation and Property Maintenance Skills

We offer a Level 3 Certificate in Building, Installation and Property Maintenance Course, which allows you to complete the following courses

Plumbing course, 5 days
Tiling course, 5 days
Plastering course, 5 days
Carpentry course, 5 days

These trades above are taught at our training centre in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire. Local accommodation is available.

You can complete the training as either as a block or split into separate trade courses completed over 12 months.

Course Details - Level 3 Certificate in Building, Installation and Property Maintenance Skills

During this course you will complete the following trade courses. Each of the trade courses is taught over 5 consecutive days, Monday to Friday. The trades are ideal for people who want to cover the basic skills in these trades but don’t need/want to learn as much as is covered in the 9 day courses for these trades. At the end of each trade description below it states what is not covered that is covered in the 9-day trade course.

Plumbing course – 5 days.

During this plumbing course you will:

Install two full bathroom suite comprising of a bath, basin and w/c, and using copper pipe and soldered end feed fittings, speedfit pipe and fittings, compression fittings and flexi-hoses.
Put together all of the components of a bathroom suite – legs on the bath and level, taps, waste, contents of toilet cistern.
Know how to complete maintenance work to faulty taps, faulty toilets, damaged pipes, etc.
Understand domestic plumbing systems including drainage systems
Understanding fittings, traps, waste products, etc. and their suitable uses, terminology and jargon used.
Understanding the different methods used to price jobs, dealing with customers and overcoming problems that may arise. You will also be provided with support after completing your course and you are able to contact your tutor, email or arrange to call into the training centre to discuss your queries.
Fully answer all your questions related to what is covered on the course.

Note: During this course you will not complete any training on heating systems. Heating systems is covered in the 9-day course.

Plastering Course – 5 days

During this plastering course you will:

Apply finishing plaster to flat walls.
Apply finishing plaster to a wall with a window opening including reveals.
Apply finishing plaster to a ceiling.
Apply finishing plaster to an attached pier.
Prepare backgrounds using PVA and blue grit.
Fix skim beads.
Understand and carryout preparations required prior to applying finishing plastering.
Understand the different tools and equipment used when applying finishing plaster.
Answer your questions related to what is covered on the course, you are taught by experienced tradesmen with a passion for the trade.

Note: during this course you will not learn/practice fixing plasterboards to stud and solid walls, board ceiling or complete patch and repair work.

Carpentry Course – 5 days

During this carpentry course you will complete:

Correct use of hand and power tools used within this carpentry course.
Build stud walls.
Hang a door into a door frame including fitting door furniture including hinges, handles, tubular notice latch.
Cut and fix architrave.
Cut and fix skirting boards to various angles.
Fully answer all your questions related to the course contents, you are taught by experienced tradesmen with a passion for the trade, ask as many questions as you wish during the course.

There is no charge for this and you can call at anytime in the future.

Note: During this course you will not install a door casing and fit a door into a new casing, you won’t install laminate flooring, you won’t get the extra time to practice all the elements. These are covered in the 9-day course.

Tiling Course – 5 days

During this tiling course you will:

Understand how to set out ready for tiling – very important to know the correct method.
Fix 150 x 150mm tiles to walls.
Fix 200 x 100mm tiles to walls in brick bond style.
Fix 150 x 150mm tiles around a window opening.
Apply grout to walls.
Fix floor tiles.
Grout floor tiles.
Practice tile cutting using a large selection of different hand nippers, dry cutters and wet cutters.
Understand different tiles available and their suitability for different applications.
Identify background surfaces and understand any preparation that they may require.
Use a selection of tools, equipment and materials used in floor and wall tiling.
You will also be provided with support after completing your tiling course and you are able to contact your tutor, email or call into the training centre to discuss your queries.
Fully answer all your questions related to the trade, you are taught by experienced tradesmen with a passion for the trade, ask as many questions as you wish during the course.

Note: During this course you don’t get to complete the large project tiling the wall areas using 600 x 300 wall tiles. This is covered on the 9-day course.

Duration and Cost

20 days attendance at our centre. The course can either be attended as a block or as separate trade courses completed over 2 years.

Our centre is open from 8am until 5pm Monday to Thursday and 8am until 4pm on a Friday. You will receive email confirmation of your start and finish times when you select each trade.

The course is held at our Stoke-on-Trent centre, ST6 2DJ. There are a number of hotels within the area, please see the link at the bottom or email for more information. Please arrive at the training centre at least 15 minutes before the course start time.

Location of training centre

Our training centre is based in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, ST6 2DJ. We have no other training centres anywhere else in the UK and we are not associated with any other training providers.

There are several hotels and B&Bs within 5/10 miles of our training centre. We have agreed reduced rates for people using ELC funding at hotels. pleas either email or call for more information.

Support provided when choosing a course

We will provide you with as much information, advice and guidance as we possibly can and if we are not able to offer you the course that best suits your needs or give you the information you require we will signpost you to somewhere that is able to. We do not pressure you to book onto any course and if we feel that you would be better suited to a course we do not offer then we will give you the contact information of a college that does.

Hopefully the majority of the information you require is available on this website but if you have any questions at all then please contact us and we will help in any way we can.

We would like to invite you to attend the training centre to view the facilities and discuss the course with both the tutors and current learners. We suggest if possible that you visit our centre towards the end of a course as people in general are always happy at the beginning of training and you want to make sure that they are as happy at the end of the course. When you visit you will be free to discuss the course with current learners on a 1-to-1 basis, if someone has paid good money or used limited funding to attend a course and they are not happy they will definitely tell you. If you visit towards the end of a course you will also be able to see the standard that everyone on the course has achieved.

One of the most popular comments we receive on questionnaires is that people did not expect to reach the high standard that they do on a course, it is also one of the most popular negative comments that we receive by people who are not aware of what we offer as they will say ‘you won’t be any good after 10 days’, if you yourself are unsure then why not pop down for a pressure free look around.

During Training

During your time with us every member of staff will do their best to help you achieve your aims. You will be provided with supporting literature relating to your trade and have access to further reading to research the trade further in your own time.

If you struggle on any element of the course then we will provide additional training at no extra cost to ensure that you reach the required standard.

If you have any learning difficulties or disabilities or have any physical difficulties or disabilities then we will support you throughout and this additional support will remain between the centre and the individual. The majority of the training courses are practical based but if you do have any concerns then please contact the centre.

We will also provide you with additional IAG relating to progression routes available after completing the course including further training, finding employment and starting to work for yourself. Whilst on a course please contact a member of staff if you require any further in information.Whilst you are at the centre there may be other courses running so if you have any questions relating to another trade please feel free to speak to the relevant tutor – they are all here to help you.

After Training

We will continue supporting you after you have completed a course with us and you can contact us either by email, phone or in person to discuss any aspects that you covered on your course. For example you may wish to contact us to clarify how to complete a job or how to price a job or maybe to ask for information on writing a business plan.

Your tutors will give you their contact telephone numbers and email address so if you have any questions at all you can give them a call. It is invaluable to have this continuous support available and will give you the confidence to complete work away from the centre.

You are Taught by Experienced Tradespeople.

Our courses are intensive but taught in a relaxed, friendly and professional manner by experienced tradespeople. We will fully support you when you finish your training course so you will be confident using your new found skills, after completing any training with us you are able to call into the centre or contact your tutor directly to discuss anything that you covered on your course.

More Training for your Money.

Less classroom time, more tools in hands time. Although our courses are short they are very intensive and you will be completing practical work from day 1. The only way you are going to learn is by having expert advice and lots of practical time to practice, practice, practice.

It is also important when completing a course that you are working in a good sized area as this give you the confidence to complete work when you leave the centre. When deciding on which training centre to attend take the time to compare sizes of training bays and visit a centre when a course is on to speak with learners and see the standard of with the produce.

Regular Start Dates.

We have courses starting every two weeks, throughout the year. We do not close for bank holidays, half terms, college summer holidays. We only close for two weeks at Christmas. Below is a video we received from a gent who used his ELC funding to complete plastering, plumbing and tiling courses at our centre. The video shows a walkthrough of a job he completed where he took the rooms from bare brick to a finished master bedroom with ensuite.
